(Does the pope shit in the woods?)
Ask a silly question and get a silly response.
No. They’re not. They’re scatter-gun communications, open-ended and open to anyone. Plus, they’re incredibly time sensitive. If a status update were a fruit, it would be raspberry: small, juicy, sweet but doesn’t travel well.
Unlike email: the detailed, record keeping, information packed messages which superseded the letter only recently. The email is more of a potato: an Everyman, everyday vegetable, that’s wholesome and lasts for ages.
If the answer’s no then why ask the question? Because it’s important to know the distinction. The status update is a far newer, less conventional form of communication. So consume and grow them wisely, but remember that they might just be a seasonal thing.
